R-1 Religious Workers
Religious workers may come to the U.S. on a temporary or permanent basis.
To qualify, the foreign national must have been a member of a religious denomination having a bona fide non-profit religious organization in the US for at least two years immediately preceding the filing of the petition. This is a petition based category which must be initiated by the religious organization in the US.

This includes ministers, workers performing a religious vocation (lifetime commitment to a religious way of life through vows, investitures, ceremonies, etc.) or other religious occupation. Individuals who work in positions that are primarily administrative or support such as janitorial, maintenance workers, clerical employees, fundraisers, persons solely involved in solicitation of donation or similar positions do not generally qualify.
